First Doctor Visit Preparation (Simple Plan)

If you haven’t seen a clinician in a long time, it’s normal to feel unsure about what to say. The goal is not to be perfect — it’s to be clear, organized, and honest.

Before you go

  • Write your top concerns (choose 1–3 priorities)
  • List current meds and supplements
  • Note allergies and past reactions
  • Bring records if you have them (referrals, labs, imaging)
  • Write your questions so you don’t forget

What to say first

“I’m here because [main concern]. I want to make sure we cover [priority #1] and [priority #2]. I also have a few questions.”

What to ask

  • What’s the most likely cause?
  • What are we ruling out?
  • Do I need tests? What will they tell us?
  • What are my options, and what are the trade-offs?
  • What’s the follow-up plan?
